We’re known for hacking things for fun: computers, software, modems, ATMs, planes, guns, humans, policies and processes. Movies may feature us in roller skates with funky haircuts and psychedelic visualizations of “cyberspace,” but we’ve somehow managed to build an industry on what was - and still is - a hobby for many. The information security field has evolved, so has our community. That’s a good thing. This talk will explore how - today - we are all hackers in our own way, with an ability to drive impact and affect change

Runa Sandvik is the Senior Director of Information Security at The New York Times, focusing on defense, contextual risk mitigations for the newsroom, and innovative solutions for journalistic security. Her work builds upon experience from her time at The Tor Project, Freedom of the Press Foundation, consulting for established media organizations, and working closely with freelancers around the world. Runa is also a sake sommelier, enjoys traveling, and tweets as @runasand.
